Tetraploids had larger fruit than diploids in 2017 ( P < 0.0001), suggesting there was a gigas effect from polyploidy in evergreen huckleberries. Measurements were taken on diploid, mixoploid, and tetraploid (2 x, 2 x + 4 x, 4 x ) cytotypes, once in 2017, five times over 9 weeks in 2018, and three times over 9 weeks in 2019. The fruit volume (mm ³ ) and for soluble solids content (SSC, ☋rix) were measured using a digital caliper and a digital refractometer, respectively. Plant qualities were determined by measuring plant height and width, obtained in Fall 2017. This fruit and plant quality study provides a contribution to the scientific knowledge base that is currently lacking for evergreen huckleberries. The purpose of this study was to assess the impacts of polyploidy on the fruit and plant qualities of V. To obtain variation in plant qualities, we induced polyploidy in a collection of plants in 2013. There is interest in this species as a native, edible, evergreen landscape shrub, but it requires improvement of the fruit and plant qualities for an eventual cultivar release. To our knowledge, tetraploid forms of evergreen huckleberry have not previously been evaluated. Evergreen huckleberry is diploid (2 n = 2 x = 24), but unreduced gametes have been reported that facilitated in interspecific tetraploids. Vaccinium ovatum (evergreen huckleberry) is an evergreen shrub native to the Pacific Northwest.

These equations highlighted differences in fruit growth patterns between early and late ripening highbush blueberry cultivars. Exponential mixed models accurately fitted blueberry growth patterns. The time between relative extremes of absolute growth acceleration is proposed as an objective criterion for fixing stage boundaries within growth curves. ‘O’Neal’ did not exhibit a defined double-sigmoid pattern. In later ripening cultivars ‘Cape Fear’ and ‘Herbert’, clear-cut double-sigmoid patterns were observed, absolute growth rate models exhibited two marked peaks, and relative growth rate showed an initial decreasing trend, and a subsequent peak. Gompertz II mixed model provided the best fit to fruit growth data and was used for further analysis. Mixed-effects five-parameter exponential (Gompertz I and II logistic monomolecular) models were fitted to fruit diameter data from 2 years and three cultivars grown in the field in a cool temperate environment.

The goal of this work was to characterize and compare fruit growth of cultivars differing in ripening time using exponential non-linear mixed models. Blueberry fruit growth commonly exhibits a double-sigmoid pattern.
